A Brief History

Henderson State University Archives was established by President Martin B. Garrison in 1975 to preserve the history of the institution.  Previous to the Archives Henderson State Teachers College Museum (no longer existing) operated by the university archeologist preserved and displayed many documents that had been collected or donated by previous students.  Due to space limitations at Gross-Seymour house on Henderson Street, the museum transferred most of the paper documents to the Huie Library.

The Archives was managed from the time of establishment and until 2001 by J. Robert Greene.  Mr. Greene was an Associate Professor of History when appointed the position.  He was accredited at Ohio State University and Ohio Historical Society.  He had two locations for Archives depositories:  a room in Arkansas Hall and a McBrien Hall vault.  Mr. Greene past away a short time after his retirement in 2001 and at that time the Archives was moved to the Huie Library.  The Archives room was dedicated to J. Robert Greene in 2006.

Currently the Archives is undergoing a reorganization and selected parts of the collection will be available online through the HSU Archives website.
