Granville Goodloe
Arkadelphia Methodist College believed firmly in developing its students religious natures. Professor Granville Goodloe superintendent Sunday School at the local Arkadelphia Methodist Church in 1902 according to recommendations by the Quarterly Conference (Bledsoe 64-5).
By 1895, graduates from Arkadelphia Methodist College began to fill positions in the business world, the church, and in education. Their degrees were also recognized by schools outside Arkansas as expressed in a letter to Prof. Granville Goodloe from Dean Tillett at Vanderbilt Biblical school (Bledsoe I: 70).
Leslie Goodloe
In June 1915, Leslie Goodloe replaced Walter W. Brown on the Henderson Brown College Board of Trustees (Bledsoe I: 113)
In photo of Seniors of 1909 (Bledsoe I: 163).
Continued to serve Henderson as Trustee at least through 1920. These were difficult years financially especially after the fire on February 3, 1914, and ensuing rebuilding process (Bledsoe I: 243).
The financial situation became crucial in the late 1910s when HBC would be sold by the Clark County Sheriff for its mortage of $56,425 (leaving an unpaid balance, that would become a debt against the Church) if it could not raise $110,000 in subscriptions* before April 1, 1918 (Bledsoe I: 294).
Subscription schools were supported by parents who paid reasonable amounts for each child enrolled. These schools were often conducted by itinerant of traveling teachers usually during the summer months and they provided students with a working knowledge of reading, writing, and basic math. In 1848, Samuel Stevenson and J.M. Gilkey came to the Arkadelphia area to teach and two years later they established the first school in Arkadelphia. On April 28, 1869, Stevenson sold the Arkadelphia Female Institute to Mary C. Connelly. She operated the school until 1875, and she charged from twenty to thirty-five dollars tution for the five month terms (Bledsoe I: 3,7).
Leslie Goodloe presented Dr. James E. Congdon with a purse in appreciation for the three months work he devoted to campaigning for subscriptions for HBC even though Congdon was a Presbyterian minister (Bledsoe I: 296).
“Upon the joint ownership of HBC by both Methodist conferences, in a special meeting on February 25, 1921, the Alumni association elected Leslie Goodloe as it member on the Board of Trustees” (Bledsoe I: 340). Goodloe continued to serve on the Board until at least 1929 when HBC closed its doors as a Methodist college (Bledsoe I: 340).”…the HBC Board did not endorse the plan, as was later reported erroneously in the State papers. Neither did the Trustees voice ‘their disapproval in a more definite form…out of their respect’ for their Chariman Harvey C. Couch, who was also a member of the Educational Commission” (Bledsoe I: 376).
Archelaus Turrentine
Board member from 1896 to March 1, 1921, when he volunteered to give up his position on board after 25 years because of joint ownership called for reorganization of Board (Bledsoe I: 42).
