APA Notes on Style
- Page Order: Number all pages (except the artwork for figures)
consecutively, in the upper right hand corner with arabic
numerals. Use the following page order:
- title page with running head for publication, title, and byline and institutional affiliation (separate page, numbered page 1)
- abstract (separate page, numbered 2)
- text (start on a separate page, numbered 3)
- references (start on a separate page)
- appendixes (start each on a separate page)
- author note (start on a separate page)
- footnotes (list together, starting on a separate page)
- tables (start each on a separate page)
- figure captions (list together, starting on a separate page)
- figures (place each on a separate page) (287-8).
- Margins
- Use uniform margins of at least 1 in. the top, bottom, left, and right
of every page (286).
- Each typed line is typically no more than 6 1/2 in. Let a line run short
rather than break a word with a hyphenation at the end of a line (287).
- Type no more than 27 lines of text on each page (not including page header
and number) (287).
- Spacing
- Double-space between all lines of the manuscript, including the title,
headings, footnotes, quotations, references, figure captions, and all
parts of tables (286).
- Triple- or quadruple-spacing may be used immediately before of after a
displayed equation (286).
- Never use single-spacing (286).
- Electronic Media
- Direct readers as closely as possible to the information being cited --
reference specific documents rather than home or menu pages whenever
possible
- Provide addresses that work. At a minimum, a reference to an Internet
source should provide a document or title description, a date of
publication/update, and/or date of retrieval, and an address (a URL).
Whenever possible, identify the authors of the document.
