Turabian Notes on Style
- Title Page:
- Full title.
- Your name.
- Course title.
- Instructor's name.
- Due date.
- Page Order:
Do not number the title page,
but do count it as the paper's first page. Place all subsequent page numbers in the top right corner of the page. Use your last name or an abbreviation of the title as a header.
- Margins
are 1" on the top, bottom, left and right.
- Double-space
all of the text, including block quotes.
- Single-space
endnotes, footnotes, and bibliographic entries.
- Long Quotations
are blocked and double-spaced.
- Bibliographies
include the sources used in
writing a paper. The following bibliographic style is primarily used for papers in
the non-scientific fields, especially in the humanities.
- Place the bibliography after the last page of text (if footnotes were used or after the endnotes
page).
- Center "Bibliography" across the top of the page. Do not underline, italicize or
place in quotation marks.
- Arrange alphabetically by authors' last names.
- When a source has two or more authors, use "and" instead of "&." Use the first
author's name inverted followed by "et al" if there are four or more authors.
- Single space each entry and double-space between entries.
- Begin each entry at the left margin, and indent additional lines one-half inch.
- Works Cited or Reference Lists
for the
author-date system require a detailed list of sources that provides all
bibliographic information.
- Begin the Works Cited or Referencelist on a separate page. Center the words Works
Cited or Reference List at the top of the page. Do not underline, italicize or
place in quotation marks.
- Arrange items alphabetically by author, interfiling books, articles, etc. If
there are two or more works by the same author, use three hyphens instead of
the author's name in all entries after the first. Arrange entries
alphabetically by title or chronologically by year.
- Single space each entry and double-space between entries.
- Indent the second and following lines one-half inch.
- If no author is given, start with the title and then the date.
- Italicize titles (use underlining if you are using a typewriter).
- Parenthetical citations
consist of two basic
elements -- authors' names and dates of publication -- usually in parentheses.
- Precede specific pages, figures, or other elements following the date with a comma.
- When referencing a volume and a page number, place a colon between them [i.e.: (Beeler 4: 235)].
A reference to a volume number onlyis preceded by vol. for clarity [i.e.: (Beeler vol. 6)].
