Henderson State to merge with ASU system

The HSU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to merge with the Arkansas State University System. The motion specifically requires the continuation of the name Henderson State University, use of the Reddie mascot, and slogan, "The School with a Heart." The merger agreement will now be prepared and reviewed by Henderson and the Arkansas State System.

"I am really pleased that Henderson will maintain its name, unique traditions and history as we serve the next generation of Reddies," Elaine Kneebone, acting president, said. "Your desire to retain our name and our unique heritage came through loud and clear in recent weeks at forums, in person, and on social media. Our traditions matter. We are Henderson. We are Reddies. We are The School with a Heart."

Dr. Chuck Welch, president of the ASU System, issued the following statement:

“We are enthusiastic about the decision of the Henderson State board to join the ASU System family. We know system affiliation wasn’t an easy decision and pledge to do everything we can to honor Henderson’s rich tradition and mission of service to students. I’m confident that affiliation with the ASU System will strengthen Henderson, our institutions, and all of higher education in Arkansas.”

The move is subject to approval of the ASU Board of Trustees and the Higher Learning Commission, as well as action by the Arkansas General Assembly. The target for finalizing the transition would be no later than January 1, 2021.
