ADHE approves graduate certificates
Henderson State University’s Ellis College of Arts & Sciences will begin offering new graduate certificates in English and history. The certificate programs, recently approved by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, are aimed at high school teachers who might need additional hours in either English or history to teach concurrently enrolled college-level classes.
Each certificate will be based on 18 hours of coursework, in accordance with Arkansas’ rules governing the teaching of college level classes by instructors with graduate degrees in areas outside their teaching fields.
“While those pursuing the certificates will have the option of in-class attendance, it will be possible to complete either certificate, fully online, within a year,” said Dr. Megan L. Hickerson, professor of history and director of the Master of Liberal Arts Program. “The plan is to have at least two courses in each field available online every fall and spring semester, as well as during the summer.
“Any student completing the certificate would then be able, if they wished, to transfer their hours into our Master of Liberal Arts program.”
Hickerson said additional fields could be considered in the future.
